We got home on from Jamaica on a Wednesday, and less than 48 hours later I was on a plane to California to do the American Farrier’s Association clinic at The Shoein’ Shop in Yucaipa, CA. This farrier supply shop was opened decades ago by Lee Green and his family. I had done their spring clinic 5 years before on Lee’s 70th birthday. This one marked his 75th.

Travels - Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Early January found us on vacation at Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

It is not often that I have to pay for travel, but we do make the exception once a year when we take a beach vacation. I have no doubt that I could have been a beach bum, and if life had been different, probably would have tried to make my mark with an ocean-oriented career. I just really like the sea, the coast, and most of the things that go with it.

The folks at Mustad had planned the clinic several months in advance, and they allowed their suppliers to send their customers for the hands-on clinic. I know this caused a little problem since there were limited spots, but there really wasn’t any other way to make it fair. Also, having too many people at a hands-on clinic makes it so that no one gets what they are coming for, and the clinician gets worked to death. I felt bad for many of the folks that contacted me and weren’t able to come, but we did schedule another trip in June for anyone that wants some education. If you are serious about some intense training, El Picazo is going to have a 3-day clinic with me in June, followed by a FITS Exam with Fabio Furquim, CJF, ASF and myself. Travels - Argentina, Part 3

Pedro had planned for us to take a little holiday before the clinic. One thing I did not know about Pedro was that he had no idea what distance means as it relates to time. It’s like he looks at a map and thinks that since the line is only an inch long, you should be able to get there in a few minutes. For Pedro, time is not a part of the equation, so getting a rental car and driving 14 hours in one day is all just part of how its done. In fact, I think Pedro could make a 25-hour trip in less than a day.

The next day, we got up extremely early, (still light), and headed to Ushuaia. Ushuaia is at the bottom of the world. We were only 600 miles from Antarctica. Pedro has done shoeing clinics for Mustad all over Argentina, so he has farrier contacts all over Argentina. We stopped and saw several of these, and he arranged for us to shoe a horse in the Fin Del Mundo, (End Of The World). It was a lot of driving, but so worth it as we got to spend some time with, and catch up with, our two oldest friends in Argentina.

We had a lot of students come from Argentina in the mid and late 1990’s. Then it kind of dried up because of the political landscape of that country. With their last election, things in Argentina are changing, and we were finally able to make a trip to that great place that we had always wanted to see.

If you are just shoeing horses and loving the farrier trade, then you are where I was for many years. In 1992, I did my first clinic, and came on board as a Mustad clinician in the late 90s. However, it wasn’t until my book came out in 2011 that I really got a taste for what it is like as a supplier, printer, manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer, etc.   That is another thing altogether, and I sometimes miss the days where I didn’t know about it.

The week off between classes and the National Certification Course has flown by.  Kelly and I went to Louisiana to help Jacquelyn with remodeling of her new house.  Cody is still in England competing with the American Farrier Team, and we have not heard how he has done.

The last week of my winter off is about over.  The Farrier Blacksmith Course begins on Monday, then we are off to the WCB in Kentucky, straight to the AFA Convention in Alabama, and home just in time to start the main courses here at the school.

HHS News - December 2011

Hello friends. I have been on a whirlwind tour over the last 5 weeks or so. From the WCB contest in Louisiana, to a contest and clinic in Vermont, the Training and Standardisation Day for the Worshipful Company of Farriers in Stoneleigh, UK, and from there to conducting the Farrier International Testing System (FITS) Exams in South Africa. I was home a week, and then went back to the UK for the WCF Diploma exams at Hereford and Myerscough. Good to be home now, but needless to say, I am way behind. I will be home until Thursday, when Cody and I head to New Mexico for the WCB clinic at Craig Trnka’s place in Edgewood. This off season is going fast, and does not feel like much of an off season.
